Valentine’s day now seem to be the most romantic day in our lives. Lots of lovely gestures, cards, flowers, chocolates and love messages are being sent across the United states and all over the world to loved ones. It has also become a day people celebrate, rejuvenate and express their love to one other (mostly couple).

However, most people do not know that all these love gestures could be traced back to St. Valentine, who was known as queer and radical priest of the Roman Catholic Church.

Although history has it that February has been a month of romance, Valentine’s day celebration is surrounded with the mystery of both the Roman tradition and Christianity. However, all the romantic gestures as celebrated  on the 14th day of February are all in the name of St. Valentine.

Who is St. Valentine? A priest of the Roman Catholic church who decided to break the rule of Emperor Claudius II (Emperor Claudius figured out that single men were better at war than men with wives and families. He therefore banned young men from getting married) and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When the Emperor found out about his acts, he was martyred.

Another story has it that the first Valentine’s day greeting was made by St. Valentine who fell in love with a young girl who seemed to be the daughter of his jailer. Before his death, she received a letter from Valentine which was signed, “From you Valentine”. This is obviously is used till date.

Inception of Valentine’s Day: February

History has it that valentine’s day originated from a Roman Festival known as Lupercalia. This was a fertility festival which was dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. During this roman festival, boys are matched with girls and most often the matches lead to marriages.

However, with the Early church’s determination to eradicated paganism out of Rome, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day 2018 Begins the Lenten Season

If you noticed, you cannot spell Valentine without the word “lent”. Well, I didn’t start it. It has been there all along. Some people are quite not comfortable with 2018 Valentine’s day starting the Lenten period. 2018 Lenten season begins on February 14, 2018. (Ash Wednesday).

If it were possible to alter the date of 2018 Ash Wednesday so as to avoid the clash with, the Valentine’s day 2018 celebration, it would have been done by some people. This is how far our amorous emotions have led us. True love isn’t partying, receiving multiple gifts from loved ones, fans, friends, lovers even crushes.

However, there are still lots of people who live out the true meaning of Valentine: Self-giving and selfless love. Take out time to think about the love of a mother; continuous selfless giving without anticipating in return from her offspring.

Genuine soldiers and force men who give their lives for our security, the missionaries who travel to the thickest part of the world in dissemination of the Gospel. The Valentine’s day 2018 has fallen into the Ash Wednesday for a reason.

No one can change it. This means true valentine should be a celebration of true love, giving oneself for the good of the other. “Love on another as I have loved you”_Jesus.
