It has also become a day people celebrate, rejuvenate and express their love to one other (mostly couple).

However, most people do not know that all these love gestures could be traced back to St. Valentine, who was known as queer and radical priest of the Roman Catholic Church.

St. Valentine

Although history has it that February has been a month of romance, Valentine’s day celebration is surrounded with the mystery of both the Roman tradition and Christianity. However, all the romantic gestures as celebrated  on the 14th day of February are all in the name of St. Valentine.

Who is St. Valentine? A priest of the Roman Catholic church who decided to break the rule of Emperor Claudius II (Emperor Claudius figured out that single men were better at war than men with wives and families. He therefore banned young men from getting married) and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

Inception of Valentine’s Day: February

History has it that valentine’s day originated from a Roman Festival known as Lupercalia. This was a fertility festival which was dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture. During this roman festival, boys are matched with girls and most often the matches lead to marriages.

However, with the Early church’s determination to eradicated paganism out of Rome, Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day.
